Project Description:

ADVANTEC was the first traffic engineering consultant to design a fiber optic communications network using Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) technology in Los Angeles County. Besides communications design, ADVANTEC also designed traffic signal upgrades with video detection, as well as traffic signal timing and coordination for approximately 13 intersections along a 3-mile section of Firestone Boulevard, a major east-west arterial, in the City of Downey, California.

Fiber optic communications involved the detail design of the communications system using the state-of-the-art Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) technology. The PS&E package included the design of multiduct conduits with inner ducts, single mode fiber optic backbone (24 SMFO), distribution (48 SMFO) and drop (6 SMFO) cables; splice vaults; a communication hub; video and data encoders; ethernet and GigE switches; as well as TMC equipment.

For the signal system improvement design, we first developed and prioritized the list of hardware, firmware, and software for traffic signal system and communications system modifications and upgrades that would enable immediate integration with those for Lakewood Boulevard, which is a major north-south   arterial   within   the   City.    We   then prepared the PS&E package for the upgrade design for all signals, including video detection at all 13 intersections. Through the fiber-optic network, all video images are sent back to the Traffic Engineer’s Office at the City Hall for viewing.
ADVANTEC also utilized SYNCHRO software to model and analyze the corridor traffic signal network for A.M., mid-day and P.M. peak periods, and also prepared bid documents in Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) format.
